On the last leg of his trip to Japan Justin is back in Tokyo with the intention of spending a few days living like a native. The sprawling city is the most densely populated metropolitan area on Earth with 35 million individuals jostling for space. Justins week begins just before eight in the morning on the subway which many Japanese salarymen and women squeeze onto at some point during the average 60-hour working week. Justin finds the journey hot stressful and bewildering. At every stop more and more people squeeze wordlessly on but few get off.Justins painful journey leads him to a viewing at one of the citys famously tiny flats. It would ultimately drive me crazy he says shaking his head as he looks around the miniature two-room apartment. After grabbing a meal of hotdog and fries from a nearby vending machine Justin heads to a capsule hotel where 25 buys customers the chance to sleep in a space little bigger than a coffin for the night. Its not really the city of choice for the claustrophobe Justin remarks as he attempts to squeeze into his cubbyhole.With all the stress going to his head Justin decides to cut loose and take a break away from the city for a few days. Im out of sync with Tokyo he complains. Ive not fallen in love with it so far.Justins destination is the city of Hakodate on the countrys northernmost island a popular holiday retreat for Tokyos busy workers. Justin and translator Mai check into a traditional Japanese inn where they promptly settle down for a nine-course meal. Squeamish Justin picks gingerly at each course but he reaches the boundaries of his comfort zone when a large hairy crab arrives on the table.The next morning has more fishy surprises in store for Justin. Squid sashimi is a famous local delicacyand at the market delighted customers fish for their own specimens in a giant tank. However Justin remains resolutely unconvinced that he will enjoy this culinary experience. Dont look at me he yelps as he reels in his dinner. Hes got a big face Justin explains to a mystified Mai.With the squid safely netted a sweet-looking local lady steps in to chop it up and serves it to Justin on a plate but he is horrified when he realises that the tentacles are twitching. Im not putting anything thats still moving in my mouth he insists. Can Mai convince him to sample this apparently delicious local dish?After his relaxing few days in Hakodate Justin returns to Tokyo to visit the woods that become the final resting place for many Japanese people who find the high-pressured lifestyle unbearable. Aokigahara forest which lies just outside the city in the shadow of Mount Fuji has become a notorious suicide spot in recent years.Justins guide estimates that at least 350 people each year kill themselves beneath the dense canopy of trees. If you die here your body wont be found. Thats the most important thing he says explaining how suicide is considered shameful in Japanese culture. Part of the guides job is to identify potentially suicidal visitors but he admits that he is ultimately powerless to stop anyone with a death wish. The final stage of Bruce Parrys six-month journey is through Arctic Europe. He travels to a remote Russian village deep within the vast boreal forest that stretches for thousands of miles across the top of the world. Determined to master the art of manzai Justin joins local actor and fellow novice Yujiro.Justin and Yujiro attend a comedy night in which several duos perform short sketches and the audience members vote for their favourite acts. After the show Justin and Yujiro meet the winning pair who reveal some champion manzai secrets. You should shave one of them tells Justin. Japanese audiences prefer clean people.In dire need of mentorship Justin and Yujiro turn to Zenjiro master of manzai. Despite his reservations the comedy veteran helps the new double act take shape. Justin learns some essential Osaka slang and the pair get a crash course in slapstick violence. They settle on Fish and Chips as a stage name for their international act and are soon ready to hit the streets. At a bustling shopping centre Justin and Yujiro round up a small crowd to show off their new-found manzai prowess. One stranger criticises their timing while another brands Justin scary. Undeterred the pair head to a novelty costume shop to buy Justin a charming outfit involving a gold lam thong...Taking a break from rehearsal Justin visits the Edo Wonderland theme park. Translator Mai explains that the Edo period was noted for its tranquillity and peace and Edo Wonderland recreates that experience. Unlike the noise and excitement of British theme parks this small patch of 17th-century Japan is a calm haven. But there is still plenty to see and do. After watching a ninja display Justin dons a samurai costume and sharpens his skills as a swordsman and horse rider.Later Justin learns that comedy and entertainment can happen at any setting even a meal out. He also discovers that themed restaurants in Japan are not always the family-friendly establishments they are in the UK. At an Alcatraz-themed diner a waitress with exposed underwear handcuffs Justin. She leads him to a cell where he faces a food-based endurance test rather than a relaxing meal. Its the worst prison Ive ever been in Justin says after having eggs cracked on his forehead and yoghurt injected into his mouth. I wouldnt take my kids there. I wouldnt take anyone there.The pressure mounts as Justins comedy debut draws near. Fish and Chips are due to perform in Bettys Mayonnaise a transsexual cabaret bar. After a last-minute pep talk from Zenjiro Justin and his comedy partner take the stage. But catastrophe strikes when Justin forgets all of his Japanese lines onstage and he is forced to improvise. But translator Mai explains that the sexes often remain separate because increasing numbers of strong ambitious Japanese women have begun to view the male of the species as too foppish and effeminate.Justins next stop is a shop beloved by many of these men to whom the women disdainfully refer as herbivores. The store specialises in womens underwear made especially for male proportions. Justins portly physique causes much merriment among Mai and the manager who take it in turns to grope his chest. They feel nice like a girls the proprietor giggles before offering Justin a pink polka dot bra. The frills and the pink suit you he informs his baffled visitor. They match your face.After this strange experience Justin is determined to find out how Japanese singles go about attracting a partner. The intrepid host soon finds himself in a college that specialises in dating classes. Each lesson starts with a series of facial exercises designed to make the smile more attractive and Justin quickly becomes the star pupil. Justin youve been working very hard the teacher exclaims. Your face is red. Buoyed by the praise Justin heads to the front of the class to demonstrate his pulling technique. These people need to see British charm and sophistication in action he declares.Next Justin investigates the options available to frustrated singles for whom facial exercise does not cut the mustard. He finds himself in a love doll shop which stocks silicon and latex replicas of women. Justin is particularly unnerved when the proprietor offers him the chance to test one of his creations. The owner directs Justin to one of his best customers Mr Tabo a successful businessman who owns more than 100 dolls. As Justin surveys the strange landscape of Mr Tabos flat where almost every surface is covered in rubber dolls or dismembered parts of them he notices his hosts wedding ring. Im married to all of them Mr Tabo explains. I have given up on real marriage.In a bid to get the female perspective on Japans sexual subcultures Justin descends on one of Tokyos many host bars. At these venues women spend thousands of pounds a night to secure a date with an attractive young man and tonight Justin is on the menu. Justin gets a sleek new look from mentor Haruki before joining the team of preening hosts as they wait to be selected by a lucky lady. I suppose Im the chefs special Justin muses. But apparently you should never go for the special because its just the stuff theyre trying to get rid of. Business is booming for Justins colleagues but just as he works up the confidence to start touting for his own customers Haruki steps in to remind him that the punishment for poaching another hosts date is a shaved head.
