Father Merrin

At an archaeological dig in Africa, Father Lankester Merrin has his first encounter with the devil incarnate. Merrin has focused on archeology, rather than spiritual matters and is intrigued when a church buried beneath the sand is excavated. Inside, he finds many signs of devil worship. To a great extent, he has lost his faith and is particularly haunted by events during the Nazi occupation and the impact of his decisions had on his parishioners. A Catholic Priest by the name of Merrin, who once lived in Holland in Europe, witnesses evil at the hands of humans during the world wars, which he would really like to forget and replace these memories by others. He decides to travel to Cairo, which is a big city in Egypt. Sometime after his arrival in Cairo, he is asked to travel to Kenya, a country which is in Africa. When he travels to Kenya, he finds that an excavation team has unearthed an ancient church which is several centuries old. The condition of this church is very good, despite of it's age. Merrin goes underground to view this church and is fascinated by it. Then a series of deaths amidst reports of workers going insane surface. Merrin will now find out that this excavation houses an ancient evil - so ancient that it was built even before people starting worshiping Jesus in Africa. This is the prequel to the legendary movie Exorcist, evil originates from here, which gives birth to a horror that will follow Merrin for many years to come. Dr. Gene Tuskin works with troubled children, perhaps none more troubled than Regan MacNeil, who suffers from bad dreams and repressed memories. The memories she represses are of the time she was possessed by a demon. Dr. Tuskin's invention, a device that hypnotizes two persons and links their minds together, reveals that the demon, named Pazuzu, still lurks within her. It is desperate to emerge again and wreak havoc. Meanwhile, Father Philip Lamont is ordered by his cardinal to investigate the death of Father Merrin, the priest who died while performing an exorcism on Regan. Father Lamont undertakes his task reluctantly. He feels unworthy of his assignment. He also feels that Evil is literally an entity and that this entity is winning the battle over Good. His investigation takes him to Africa where he locates another recipient of Merrin's exorcising and learns something fascinating and terrible about locusts. Something beyond evil is happening in a little girl's room. Regan (Blair) has brutally changed both in the way she looks and the way she acts, with violent outbursts on everyone who comes in contact with her. Her worried mother (Burstyn) gets in contact with a priest (Miller) who comes to the conclusion that Regan is possessed.
