The film was shot in Eastern Europe, which means the mediaeval castle, the WWII trains, the countryside that escapees flee across are spectacular. Along with details of uniforms, vehicles and equipment, it all adds up to a treat for the boys. Set pieces, the Blitz firestorm, the escape through the sewers are splendidly realised and sit well alongside the subtle CGI bombsites next to period London buildings. Two stories in one - an easygoing British Corporal in France finds himself responsible for the lives of his men when their officer is killed. He has to get them back to Britain somehow. Meanwhile, British civilians are being dragged into the war with Operation Dynamo, the scheme to get the French and British forces back from the Dunkirk beaches. The infamous writer, The Marquis de Sade of 18th Century France, is imprisoned for unmentionable activities at Charanton Insane Asylumn. He manages to befriend the young Abbe de Coulmier, who run's the asylumn, along with a beautiful laundress named Madeline. Things go terribly wrong when the Abbe finds out that the Marquis' books are being secretly published. Emperor Napolean contemplates sending Dr. Royer-Collard to oversee the asylumn, a man famed for his torturous punishments. It could mean the end of Charanton and possibly the Marquis himself.
