From a narrative point of view, Felix Chong & Alan Mak's OVERHEARD 2 is a sequel in name only to their underwhelming 2009 thriller. They assemble the same heavyweight cast of Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu, and the film is again produced by Derek Yee, but with an entirely new story and cast of characters. That said, the film is most certainly a continuation of the themes addressed in the first film - this is a surveillance/financial thriller where, even in a community riddled with gangsters and vengeful vigilantes, the real bad guys are the fat cat bankers and investors who manipulate the stock markets for personal gain at the expense of everybody else. The movie is about a horribly disfigured madwoman (Karena Lam) who lives in the pipes and sewage system of a condominium estate. She mistakes a boy from a family who moved in recently for her long-lost son. She kidnapped the boy and the boy's parents went on a hunt to find the madwoman and rescue their son. Hong Kong nihilism. December 22, a street quarrel leads to the death of a gang leader's son. Next day, he seeks revenge on his brother, a rival boss. He calls on Liu, a fixer, to import a hit man from the mainland. Lai Fu, a tough and youthful hick, arrives with a day pass. The cops, led by the morose Milo, hear about the killer; they open a full-scale Christmas Eve operation to find the warring brothers and Lai Fu. Lai Fu rescues a hooker, Dan Dan, from a sadist and asks her to help him find his way around Mongkok.
