Walmington on Sea 1940, the manager of Martins Bank, George Mainwaring refuses credit to a customer who wants to cash a cheque. The man protests that as a war is on he would have thought banks would have abolished red tape nonsense, Mainwaring emphasises that this man could be a spy. Mainwaring is unaware that he is a Major General. Later, Mainwaring, his chief clerk, Wilson and junior clerk Frank Pike hear the Rt. Hon. Anthony Eden's call for local defence volunteers on the radio. Sweeping into action Mainwaring takes charge when he finds the local police are not prepared for a surge of applicants. Mainwaring appoints himself Captain, Wilson the sergeant and Jones, the local butcher, Lance Corporal after the old campaigner bribes him with some sausages; they base themselves in the local church hall. Across the English Channel, the Germans plot Operation Sealion, while the LDV plot the actions they will take when faced with the enemy. As the newly formed platoon discusses petrol bomb tactics two workman arrive at the church to dismantle a church bell to be melted down for the war effort. The vicar, a campanologist decides to give his bells one final ring, unaware that he triggers off what the LDV perceive as a warning of invasion by the Germans. From 1940 to 1944, France's Vichy government collaborated with Nazi Germany. Marcel Oph ls mixes archival footage with 1969 interviews of a German officer and of collaborators and resistance fighters from Clermont-Ferrand. They comment on the nature, details and reasons for the collaboration, from anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and fear of Bolsheviks, to simple caution. Part one, "The Collapse," includes an extended interview with Pierre Mendes-France, jailed for anti-Vichy action and later France's Prime Minister. At the heart of part two, "The Choice," is an interview with Christian de la Maziere, one of 7,000 French youth to fight on the eastern front wearing German uniforms. ...Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 9/11 is making huge waves as I write this, and yet IN THE YEAR OF THE PIG proves that the concept Moore used was nothing new. Back when the war against Vietnam was being waged by LBJ, this Emile de Antonio classic connected the dots on what had actually been happening in Vietnam since the Japanese occupation forces of World War Two left. In fact, a few years later HEARTS AND MINDS used much of the same material (that time in color) but not with nearly as much historical background as de Antonio does here. This is a harrowing collection of fact, a heartbreaking showcase of official ethnic disrespect, and one of the few true staples of the '60s counterculture that neither originated from its own ranks nor is dated in its technique (black and white cinematography notwithstanding)...
