On New Year's Eve 1944, American pilot Mike Clarke (Andrew Keegan) inadvertently bets Al Capone's nephew $10,000. that he can shoot down 5 enemy aircraft. Later, forced to land near a remote village in Ireland after running out of fuel, Mike learns that he is cut off from the rest of the world with no way to rejoin the war and shoot down his fifth plane, which is the only way he can win the bet and save his own life. With nowhere to go, he eventually befriends the colorful villagers and meets a fiery red-head named Maggie (Jade Yourell) who shows this pilot that combat can take place on the ground just as well as in the air. Nineteen year old Belfastian Danny Flynn is imprisoned for his involvement with the IRA. He leaves behind among others his fourteen year old girlfriend, Maggie Hamill. Fourteen years later, Danny is released from prison and returns to his old working class neighborhood to resume his life as a boxer, fighting and opening a boxing club training aspiring young boxers. Although he has not denounced the IRA or denigrated his IRA colleagues, Danny has decided to live a life free of political violence. This move irks some of his old IRA colleagues since they feel working with the Protestants will not resolve their David versus Goliath struggle.
