In 1939, Robert Crain (Marlon Brando) forged his passport and went to India to escape his position as an officer in the German army. In 1942, British intelligence caught up to him and threatened to expose him to the Nazis unless he helped them. To do so, Crain must pose as an SS officer in effort to gain passage and complete access to a derelict German cargo vessel, the Ingo. Under the command of Captain Mueller (Yul Brynner), the Ingo is carrying enough raw rubber to keep the entire German war machine rolling for three months, raw rubber that the British and her allies desperately need themselves and want to seize.
