Buffalo newsman Evan Baxter is elected to Congress with the slogan, "Change the world." He lucks into a huge house in a new Virginia suburb. His Capitol office is also fantastic, but there's a catch: he's tapped by the powerful Congressman Long to co-sponsor a bill to allow development in national parks. In steps God, who appears to a disbelieving Evan and gently commands him to build an ark. Punjabi-speaking Shalini Singh Gujral lives a middle-classed lifestyle in the Himalayan region in India along with her mom, Kirat; dad, Jaspal; brother, Happy; and sister, Littly, and was engaged to Neil Brar as a child. Years later Neil re-locates to the United States of America, and there is no contact between him and the Gujral family but Shalini hopes to marry and live with him eventually. When pressure is applied on her due to Littly's future marriage, she travels to California, where Neil is reportedly employed with Cantect, an agency that recruits aspiring Hollywood artistes. To her shock she finds him in the arms of a blonde named Nicole, and he refuses to have to do anything with her, leave alone marry her. She is then befriended by Robert Shorwell, a Caucasian male and co-worker of Neil, who offers to Americanize her so that she can win back Neil, to which she agrees but writes to her family in India that all is well with her and Neil. Robert, and his friend, Blaine, successfully transform Shailini to an a much more acceptable female of Hispanic origin, re-name her Shelley Picante, and prepare her to woo and win back Neil. Before she could even begin to do that the Gujrals arrive in California - not only throwing her plans and her life in chaos - but also exposing Robert's secret agenda for Americanizing her. A spoiled boy named Michael Woods invites his cousin Tommy Biggs to come and spend time with him in L.A. Tommy is thrilled to see his cousin after years of not seeing each other. When Tommy arrives in L.A. Michael ignores Tommy the whole time and makes him feel unwelcome. Then, the housekeeper has a talk with Michael about ignoring Tommy and Michael says he will take Tommy to Disneyland and they would have a good time. On their way to Disneyland his girlfriend Gina, who is a total drama queen and a snob calls him and asks him if he wants to come see her and her father at the racetrack. Michael says yes and takes Tommy to a Kiddie Zone so Michael could go to the racetrack. On the way back to get Tommy, Michael gets in a car accident and writes down the wrong information to the victim. Michael and Tommy get into an argument when Michael gets home and Tommy leaves the next day. Tommy's mother calls Michael's parents to tell him how rude Michael was to Tommy. Then, Michael's parents punish him by sending him to Tommy and his aunt's ranch to work for a month for free. Michael then learns that the ranch is going to be foreclosed at the end of the month, so Michael and Tommy put their differences aside and work together to save the ranch from foreclosure.
