Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is a London hustler with ambitious plans that never work out. One day, when he encounters the most famous Greco-Roman wrestler in the world, Gregorius, at a London wrestling arena run by his son Kristo, he dreams up a scheme that he thinks will finally be his ticket to financial independence. As Fabian attempts to con everyone around him to get his scheme to work, he of course only ends up conning himself. This is an interesting tale of blind ambition, self-deception, broken dreams, and how a man who always thinks he's ahead of the game ends up tripping himself very badly. Old Mother Riley was a music hall character invented by comedian Arthur Lucan. From 1937 - 1952 he starred in 15 films in the UK, mostly with his real life wife Kitty McShane playing Old Mother Riley's daughter Kitty. The films had no sophistication at all, but were boisterous and full of slapstick humour, with Mother Riley usually caught between Kitty and her latest boyfriend, and some villain who Mother Riley invariably got the better of by the end of the film. This character study joins the painter at the height of his fame in 1642, when his adored wife suddenly dies and his work takes a dark, sardonic turn that offends his patrons. By 1656, he is bankrupt but consoles himself with the company of pretty maid Hendrickje, whom he's unable to marry. Their relationship brings ostracism but also some measure of happiness. While holidaying in Switzerland, Lawrence and his wife Jill are asked by a dying friend, Louis Bernard, to get information hidden in his room to the British Consulate. They get the information, but when they deny having it, their daughter Betty is kidnapped. It turns out that Louis was a Foreign Office spy and the information has to do with the assassination of a foreign dignitary. Having managed to trace his daughter's kidnappers back to London, Lawrence learns that the assassination will take place during a concert at the Albert Hall. The Sleeping Cardinal of the title is a painting used by Moriarty to hide behind, part of an intricate plot to smuggle stolen bank notes abroad. The plot used elements from two Conan Doyle stories: The Empty House and The Final Problem. Said to be the best of the Wontner series, it avoided the implausible deductions that became a feature of the later films. Moriarty makes an appearance as a master of disguise, a departure from the Canon. The film ran for over a month on Broadway, unprecedented for a British film in 1931, and was awarded the New York critics' Cinema Prize for best mystery drama.
