A number of fighters are invited to DOA, an invitational martial arts contest. They travel to the tournament island by plane, until they have to jump out mid-flight with parachutes, and then have until sundown to reach the main island to be entered into the tournament. Fighters are then pooled against one another in a knock-out style tournament, with the loser of a battle sent home, and the winner progressing to the subsequent round. Yet as silly as some situations may seem (and let's be honest, they aren't any more ridiculous than your average Sly Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie), they're never boring, and when the spectacular fights begin it doesn't matter--Jet Li's stunning skill and natural charisma make him magnetic. Anita Mui, costarring as a police detective tracking Li down, gets to do her share of fighting as well. In the finale, father and son team up for a battle as funny as it is spectacular. A ceremony meant to commemorate the considerable achievements of kung fu master Shang Kuan Cheng (Jack Long Shi-gu) is interrupted by a note bearing an anonymous challenge. Although he was planning on retiring, Shang Kuan realizes that, to preserve his honor and justify the title Champion of Kiangnan, he must reverse this decision to leave the martial world. Accompanied by his daughter (Nancy Yen Nan-hsi) and three students, the elderly teacher (an acknowledged master of the Pai Mei style) journeys across country to fight The Seven Grandmasters, all of whom excel in their various disciplines. However, shortly after challenging and defeating the first opponent, Sha (Lung Fei), Shang Kuan is found near the man's dead body. The marks on the victim reveal that Sha was killed by a Pai Mei technique but the injuries Shang Kuan inflicted upon him were not life-threatening. While traveling to meet his fourth opponent, the master encounters Hsia Hsiao-ying (Lee Yi-min), a rather clumsy young man, who wishes to become his disciple. Shang Kuan refuses but Hsiao-ying persists in his quest, following the teacher and doing everything he can think of to win the man's favor. After enduring much hardship and the petty humiliations of the senior students, Hsiao-ying eventually succeeds via his unyielding sincerity. However, even after almost two years, there is still much traveling to be done and the strain of that, the fighting, and the weather may be taking their toll on Shang Kuan. A regional champion martial artist that moonlights as an honour-bound assassin, Tu Ta Shen, solidifies his reputation by challenging top fighters en route to the other champion, Nan Pa Tien, in order to unify both titles. Along the way he defeats a man who's shame in defeat drives him to suicide. Before he dies, recognizing Tu Ta Shen honour, he asks Tu Ta Shen to defeat a group of Manchu supporters led by none other that Nan Pa Tien. The dying mans son, Sa Woo, tries to kill Tu Ta Shen but is easily outmatched. Tu Ta Shen offer to teach Sa Yoo enough so that he can take revenge for his father.
