This leisurely, sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-harrowing dramedy by Jordan Susman concerns the misadventures of college dropout Puck (Devon Gummersall), a would-be anarchist who lives in a commune with other free spirits and whose anti-authoritarian misdeeds amount to low-key street theatre. That changes with the arrival of Johnny Black (Dylan Bruno), a violent militant who eventually controls Puck and his friends, briefly lands them all in jail, and later develops a monstrous confederacy of skinheads, gun nuts, and environmental extremists. The marvel of this film is that with so much harrowing stuff going on, The Anarchist Cookbook is a gentle yet solid character piece set against a peculiar history--a modern-day Flaubert tale of a young man's sentimental education. Standout performances from John Savage as Puck's supplanted guru, Katharine Towne as the hero's unlikely Republican girlfriend, and Gina Philips as an omni-sexual monster who sleeps with everyone but the hero. When a shoulder injury ended his minor league pitching career twelve years ago, Jim Morris resorted to the next best thing: coaching. A French foreign exchange student, named Genevieve, comes to a small town in Texas to attend a local high school where she shacks up with the school's popular head cheerleader, Starla, and her parents. But Genevieve is anticipating exactly that type of response from Starla and soon turns everyone, including Starla's friends and family, against her by playing the poor victim and making it appear that Starla's the aggressor. When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the F.B.I. decides that they must get an undercover agent as a participant in the contest. A search uncovers no suitable candidate other than a bumbling female agent. Reluctantly, her captain agrees to let her join the team working the case. The team is led by a womanizing agent who has an apparent reluctant attraction to Bullock's character. She enters as Miss New Jersey, replacing a contestant who was discovered to have acted in a porno film. The pageant managers are immediately aghast about the agent appearing in the pageant, but arrange a top handler to come give her a quick makeover, with the expected outstanding results. Unfortunately, she still is bumbling. When the killer is suddenly caught, everything seems to be over, except the female agent tries to convince her boss that something is still not right. She has discovered that the pageant managers are being dismissed after 21 years for younger people, and Bergen's character may not be as solid as she seems on the surface. Dr. T's sister-in-law, Peggy, meddles in every situation she stumbles into, while one woman, Bree, a golf instructor, is the only one who offers him any comfort and salvation.
