The term "shock value" is a major understatement for this film. Kern's use of camerawork and lighting is exceptional in itself, but the story line and soundtrack for his movies are generally designed to jar the audience out of a passive complacency, and my god does he know how to do that. This movie is indeed unique in that it attempts to portray a certain sensibility/point of view without any sort of compromise; there are no holds barred here and the audience is the target.
