Durante il periodo delle Repubbliche Marinare, in Italia, Otello, detto "il moro di Venezia", viene inviato dal doge a difendere la roccaforte di Cipro dai musulmani, dopo il suo matrimonio con la bella e nobile Desdemona. Avendo scelto Cassio come aiutante, Otello provoca invidia e gelosia nel perfido Jago, che comincia ad insinuare dubbi sulla fedelta della moglie. Con un artificio, il subdolo Jago crea "l'incidente del fazzoletto di Desdemona". A questo punto l'ingenuo Otello gli crede e, folle di gelosia, soffoca la moglie con un cuscino. Ma la verita viene a galla e Jago e smascherato e condannato a morte. Otello non resiste al rimorso e si suicida. Giuseppe De Santis's Bitter Rice was a landmark movie as much in the United States as in Italy. The lust-soaked story of criminals and rice-workers in the Po valley -- with American actress Doris Dowling as the moll of wanted criminal Vittorio Gassman -- and its American-style violence created a sensation at home, while the earthy depiction of the female rice-workers (and, most of all, the pneumatic presence of Silvana Mangano) made it the movie to see in America in the fall and winter of 1950-51. It was also referred to obliquely in the 1956 I Love Lucy episode "Lucy's Italian Movie," where Lucille Ball masquerades as a grape-picker to get into a film called "Bitter Grapes."
