Ken Park focuses on several teenagers and their tormented home lives. Shawn seems to be the most conventional. Tate is brimming with psychotic rage; Claude is habitually harassed by his brutish father and coddled, rather uncomfortably, by his enormously pregnant mother. Peaches looks after her devoutly religious father, but yearns for freedom. They're all rather tight, or so they claim. But they spend precious little time together and none of them seems to know much about one another's family lives. This bizarre dichotomy underscores their alienation # the result of suburban ennui, a teenager's inherent sense of melodrama, and the disturbing nature of their home environments. I saw this way back at the 2000 Seattle Film Festival and memories of it have stuck with me since then. No idea if this film is available in any form today. Having struggled through but been intrigued by J. G. Ballard's book, this seems to be a fairly faithful reflection of what the book was all about, while being somewhat easier to digest {as if I can claim to have any idea what the book is all about!}. The merging of the themes of sex, celebrity, architecture, and modern consumer society somehow work on screen, even though it's a very confusing and narrative-free picture. There's no real way to make sense of what is happening scene by scene, but there are some fabulous location shots and effects. If you saw Crash then this is worth trying to see. After a troubled year in school, Jodi is informed by her teacher, Ms. Hemp, that she will recommend to Jodi's father that the girl be sent to a special boarding school next year. Horrified at the thought of being separated from her beloved father, Jodi does what any young child in the same situation would do: she sneaks into the school the next day when nobody is there but Ms. Hemp is there and brutally murders her by crushing her with a bookcase so Ms. Hemp can't meet with her father. Butch "Bullet" Stein is a Jewish junkie from the mean streets of Brooklyn, is paroled after eight years in prison. Butch rips off a runner for local drug dealer, Tank, and is soon right back into his old habits of snorting coke and shooting up heroin with his best friend Lester. Enraged by Butch's affront and already determined to get revenge on him for a past wrong, Tank sets about getting even with his old enemy by hiring a hulking brute, Gates to beat Butch. When the confrontation occurs, however, Gates breaks his hand on the battle-hardened Butch. Besides Lester, the only people in Butch's corner are his two brothers, the mentally-unhinged Vietnam War veteran Louis and aspiring artist Ruby, neither of whom can be counted on to help him in the inevitable showdown. A police Lieutenant goes about his daily tasks of investigating homicides, but is more interested in pursuing his vices. He has accumulated a massive debt betting on baseball, and he keeps doubling to try to recover. His bookies are beginning to get agitated. The Lieutenant does copious amounts of drugs, cavorts with prostitutes, and uses his status to take advantage of teenage girls.
