Elvis movies are — with the exception of his first couple films — both weightless and formless. For a man known for those all-too-sexual hips, there's always a chaste love interest, and the stories tend to end with the intimation of marriage. The movies would be typed as comedies if they were a tad funnier, though there are more "jokes" than real laughs. There are musical numbers, but these aren't real musicals, and there's not a lot of dancing — Elvis was kept from showing the moves in movies that made him famous as a live performer. And sometimes he got stuck in period pictures, such as 1966's Frankie and Johnny, meaning Elvis would not be doing anything too rock and roll. During the Watergate investigation, "Deep Throat" advised to "follow the money," and the amount of cash Presley was paid to make such staid entertainment like this is likely the cause of his cinematic gentrification. But, really, what's the point of making a movie with Elvis Presley that you can take your grandparents to? Frankie and Johnny follows Elvis as Johnny, a riverboat performer and degenerate gambler who wastes all of his and pianist Cully's (Harry Morgan) spare cash on any game of chance available. Trying to break his unending losing streak, he consults with a gypsy, who tells him a redhead will bring him luck. Such doesn't go over well with his love-interest Frankie (Donna Douglas) when that woman, Nellie Bly (Nancy Kovack), shows up and does lead to a huge score for Johnny. Along the way, Cully writes the title song, which turns out to be a big hit, but the casino owner is in love with Nellie and is threatened by Johnny's attraction to Nell. There's not much of a movie here, but it's all rather painless. And when it comes to Elvis Presley's later movies, maybe that's saying something. Luther Heggs aspires to being a reporter for his small town newspaper, the Rachel Courier Express. He gets his big break when the editor asks him to spend the night at the Simmons mansion that, 20 years before, was the site of a now famous murder-suicide. The case has aroused local interest not only because of the anniversary but due to the fact that the family heir, Nick Simmons, has returned to Rachel aiming to tear the mansion down. Luther's account of his wild, ghost-ridden night in the house leads Simmons to sue for libel, but with the aid of his friend Kelsey they determines what exactly happened that night long ago and the identity of the real killer. "The Mystery of the Riverboat" while ending each chapter with a cliffhanger is more episodic in nature than the usual Universal serial and somewhat similar to Universal's 1934 "Tailspin Tommy" in that aspect as some plot lines are completed as a story within the overall story. Plus, while some serials often contained a title song or motif throughout, this one has six songs scattered around and about performed by either Marion Martin - and we have no idea if she was dubbed or did her own warbling - and former Three Mesquiteer and future head Mouseketeer Jimmie Dodd, who did his own. The overly-plotted (for juvenile Saturday matin e audiences to keep up with over a period of 13 weeks) story finds three Louisiana families, the Langtrys, Perrins and Duvals, as co-owners of swamp land in the Louisiana bayou country. Unaware that the property contains rich "nitrolene" deposits, they are considering an offer from speculator Herman Einreich, who is well aware of the secret, having killed the scientist who discovered it and stolen his geological maps and notes. He boards a river boat, "The Morning Glory", heading for Duval's Landing. Others on the boat are the skipper, Captain Ethan Perrin, his daughter Jenny; Steve Langtry; Rudolph Toller; Bruno Bloch and Louis Shaber who represent a foreign faction also interested in the land; and a bearded man named Clayton, who is really the disinherited renegade son of the Duvals, Paul Duval, who thinks his brother Jean has cheated him out of his share of the Duval estate and going home to get even. With the aid of Batiste, "Clayton" murders Einreich, steals his maps and almost kills Steve and Jenny, who are saved by Napoleon, ship steward and Steve's friend. The Toller gang, assisted by ship entertainer Celeste Eltree, and headed by Rudolph Toller, pin Einreich's murder on Steve, who heads for the swamps at the end of chapter six, where he encounters some hostile Cajuns in Chapter 7, and ends up in a jail that ends up floating down the river when the levee breaks. But there are still six chapters to go, with lots of plot left, including chapter 12, where Steve, in a twist from the usual serial hero, manages to blow himself up as opposed to the villains doing it for him. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar and actress Jane Darwell won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ma Joad, the matriarch of the struggling migrant farmer family.
