Fritz Rotter

An industrialist (Joseph Cotton) and a pianist (Joan Fontaine) meet on a trip and fall in love. Through a quirk of fate, they are reported dead in a crash though they weren't on the plane. This gives them the opportunity to live together free from their previous lives. Unfortunately, this artificial arrangement leads to greater and greater stress. Paul (James Lydon), a young man whose father was once lieutenant Governor of California before his untimely death, has a strange, recurring dream in which his mother (Sally Eilers) falls in love with a dangerous man (Brett Curtis, played by Warren William), a dream which also contains the image of his father's death in an automobile accident under mysterious circumstances. Through the help of his friend, a psychiatrist (Regis Toomey), Paul realizes that his dream is coming true, and that his mother is falling under Curtis's influence. Curtis, in fact, is a homicidal maniac who lives as an out-patient at the sanitarium of the unscrupulous Dr. Muhlbach (Charles Arnt). When Curtis makes an attempt to marry Paul's mother, Paul intervenes, and after a series of events discovers that Muhlbach and Curtis murdered Paul's father many year earlier, just as it happened in Paul's dream.
