College freshman John (Gib) Gibson decides to go cross country to visit his friend in California during winter break. Awaiting there is a bikini-clad babe whom his friend assures him is a "sure thing". Meanwhile, Allison, a cute (but somewhat anal retentive) girl at Gib's college has also decided to head out to Cal. to see her boyfriend during break. Three workers, Zeke, Jerry and Smokey, are working at a car plant and drinking their beers together. One night when they steal away from their wives to have some fun they get the idea to rob the local union's bureau safe. First they think it is a flop, because they get only 600 dollars out of it, but then Zeke realizes that they also have gotten some 'hot' material. They decide to blackmail their union. This is a fantastic and very rare documentary film by Martin Scorsese, and one of the greatest interviews ever recorded. The subject is his friend Steven Prince, best known for his role as "Easy Andy", the traveling gun salesman in "Taxi Driver". Prince is a manic raconteur, telling wild stories about his life as an ex-drug addict and a road manager for Neil Diamond. Scorsese intersperses home movies of Prince as a child as he talks about his family. When talking of his years as a heroin addict, Prince tells a story about injecting adrenaline into the heart of a woman who overdosed, with the help of a medical dictionary and a Magic Marker. This story was re-enacted by Quentin Tarantino in "Pulp Fiction" (which he then claimed as a completely original idea, as usual with him). Prince also tells a haunting story about working at a gas station in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, and being robbed by a large drug crazed man, who Prince ends up shooting several times (this story was re-created in Richard Linklater's animated "Waking Life", this time with Prince doing the re-creation). When the body of a woman is found on an isolated beach, Homicide Lieutenant Phil Gaines and his partner, Sergeant Louis Belgrave, are assigned for the investigation. They conclude, with the support of the report of the coroner, that the victim, the hooker and strip-dancer Gloria Hollinger, committed suicide using pills. They omit to the family the existence of excessive semen in Gloria's orifices, but her father Marty Hollinger, a veteran of the Korea war, does not accept the police findings and try to locate the possible criminal following a personal investigation. The leads point to the last person to be with Gloria, the dirty and powerful attorney Leo Sellers, and also a regular costumer of Phil's girlfriend, the prostitute Nicole Britton.
