Bent on the destruction of the human race, the sinister underground organization, the Shockers, secretly plan to plunge the whole world into chaos. But the Shockers don't count on the revolt of two experimentally "reconstructed" human beings, The Masked Riders, who rise against them to thwart their diabolical plans. The first Rider fights to protect all that he holds dear, the second, crippled by a wasting disease caused by the Shockers' fiendish experiment, fights to uphold his own principles. Two years after The Masked Riders first do battle with the Shockers, a third Rider arises to confront them, known only as "Version 3″. Tetsuro Hoshino, orphaned by the Cyborgs, lives in a slum in the shadow of their megapolis. He steals a pass for Galaxy Express 999, and is saved by a mysterious woman called Maitre, a living image of his mother who had been killed by the Cyborgs. Wearing a special pendant, he sets out for Andromeda where he can obtain eternal life and avenge his parents' death.
