Bob the Gambler has decided to give up his business in order to enjoy his hobby: gambling. However, he cannot refuse one last job proposed by a friend: to take part in an amazing raid on the Deauville casino. But that day, seeing the gaming rooms, Bob is riveted by a gambling table where he wins in an unabashed fashion, and he forgets about his role in the well-planned hold-up. A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. Unlike most kids, he gets whacked with the big stick. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child's eye. The story centers on a train engineer Jacques Lantier (Jean Gabin) who lusts after Severine Roubaud (Simone Simon), the wife of his co-worker Roubaud (Fernand Ledoux). Roubaud discovers that his young wife, Severine, has been seduced by her godfather, the wealthy Grandmorin. Jealous, Roubaud forces Severine to assist in the murder of Grandmorin during a train journey. The murder is witnessed by a railway worker, Jacques Lantier, but he keeps quiet because he is in love with Severine. Disgusted by what her husband has done, Severine has an affair with Lantier and pleads with him to kill her cruel husband. Little does she know that Lantier also has a dark secret. A man and a woman arrive in a cafe-hotel near the belgian frontier. The customers recognize the man from the police's description. His name is Amedee Lange, he murdered Batala in Paris. His lady friend Valentine tells the whole story : Lange was an employee in Batala's little printing works. Batala was a real bastard, swindling every one, seducing female workers of Valentine's laundry... One day he fled to avoid facing his creditors, and the workers set up a cooperative to go on working.
