The film takes place on a remote island possibly near South Africa. Dr. Thomas Reed (William Forsythe) has been in grief ever since his son was diagnosed with a terminal illness and he decides to genetically alter his own son with Hammerhead Shark DNA, since sharks have incredibly strong immune systems, the result is a half man/ half shark hybrid that he believes saves his son. Dr. Reed then decides to take his experiment to the next level and begins to gather volunteers for the experiment and begins to genetically alter them as well, his colleagues, Dr. Preston King (Jeffrey Combs) and Dr. Jane Krause (Velizar Beniv) however are against Dr. Reed's experiments but decide to go along with it. After several tests fail, in which nearly all of the subjects died because they couldn't withstand the Shark DNA, Dr. Reed finally succeeds and he invites a few of his old colleagues who laughed at him years ago to the resort and spa on the island, among them are Amelia Lockhart (Hunter Tylo), Jane Harper (Elise Muller), Erik Anderson (Atanas Srebrev), Whitney Feder (Arthur Roberts) and Dr. Sarena Mendoveko (Lydie Denier). Once they arrive, they are treated to the luxuries of the resort. The invitation turns out to be a trap as Dr. Reed unleashes his hybrid on the guests and almost all of them are killed by Hammerhead until just Amelia, Dr. Reed himself and Whitney are left, Dr. Reed then takes Amelia and Whitney to his lab and he begins the final stage of the experiment. Down and Derby is a family comedy about a small town Pinewood Derby competition that transforms an average group of dads into an awkward bunch of competitors. On the outside, Phil Davis is the typical dad and friendly neighbor. On the inside, he is unresolved and at a breaking point with his childhood rival, Ace Montana. Desperate for the elusive first place, Phil sees his son's Pinewood Derby race as a breakthrough opportunity to beat Ace, who also has a Cub Scout son. Surrounded by more overzealous dads in the same cul-de-sac, they all disregard the event's ideals and completely take over the design, planning and construction of the cars. In the crazed world of derby fever, the kids are lucky if they get to pick the paint color or attach a decal. Hilarity builds as the dads teeter on the edge of insanity and resort to backstabbing, cover-ups and sabotage. Wives, families and jobs are ignored with extreme consequences. The farce reaches comical and outrageous levels when in the end, the young scouts prevail in a surprise twist, reminding us to never take ourselves too seriously or underestimate what kids can do. This comedy satirizes the desperate behavior of parents who compete with one another through their children, a social dynamic seen in everyday activities ranging from little league to science fairs. "They Are Among Us" is a chilling film about a boy who is more than what he seems. The film has some great creature effects and cool make-up, along with the fact that Michael Maples is hot hot hot and I would die to look like Hunter Tyler.
