In a POW camp, the Nazis have placed the huts far from the boundary so that any escape tunnel would have to be a long one. One British officer has the idea of starting a daily gynmastics routine using a vaulting horse: they can place it near the boundary and start a tunnel from under it. He and two others do escape the camp by this means and plan to make for neutral Sweden. To do that, they'll not only have to move around without arousing any suspicions, but also find a stranger from a neutral or occupied country who'll be willing and able to help them. The story centers on a train engineer Jacques Lantier (Jean Gabin) who lusts after Severine Roubaud (Simone Simon), the wife of his co-worker Roubaud (Fernand Ledoux). Roubaud discovers that his young wife, Severine, has been seduced by her godfather, the wealthy Grandmorin. Jealous, Roubaud forces Severine to assist in the murder of Grandmorin during a train journey. The murder is witnessed by a railway worker, Jacques Lantier, but he keeps quiet because he is in love with Severine. Disgusted by what her husband has done, Severine has an affair with Lantier and pleads with him to kill her cruel husband. Little does she know that Lantier also has a dark secret. A man and a woman arrive in a cafe-hotel near the belgian frontier. The customers recognize the man from the police's description. His name is Amedee Lange, he murdered Batala in Paris. His lady friend Valentine tells the whole story : Lange was an employee in Batala's little printing works. Batala was a real bastard, swindling every one, seducing female workers of Valentine's laundry... One day he fled to avoid facing his creditors, and the workers set up a cooperative to go on working. Bunuel's first feature has more of a plot than Un Chien Andalou, but it's still a pure Surrealist film, so this is only a vague outline.
