A new decade is upon us and Spanish filmmaker Jess Franco is back with a new project. The film, according to the credits, is a version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and starts off with Paula (Carmen Montes) being questioned by a Detective (Lina Romay) for the murder of her friend Paula (Paula Davis). Franco has made nearly two-hundred films in his career (probably a lot more if you count the various alternate versions) but I think it might be fair to say that this one here contains one of his smallest budgets. There are a few lines of dialogue and everything else was probably shot in one or two rooms with only three cast members and Franco doing most of the technical stuff. Even Romay only appears for a total of three-minutes so we've pretty much got very little here. In the promotional stuff the film was being called something original and unlike anything we've seen from Franco. I'd say this isn't true as the film really reminded me of a lot of those One-Shot productions where we have very little story and just long stretches of various women doing strange dances or other things. Here, the film runs a brief 66-minutes and we have an opening, a closing and everything in the middle is pretty much the two ladies making out. As with the One-Shot films, the visuals here have distorted colors, morphed cinematography and other strange things going on so again, we've seen this stuff before. I think what does set this film apart is that the visuals are certainly not the most important thing as that there belongs to the music score and this here is what was most impressive. The score jumps all over the place from Jazz to Rock to some weird, funky Country-like stuff but it's extremely catchy and is clearly the best thing about the film. Jesus (or Jess) Franco is one of the great names in B movies. With a number of pseudonyms (Clifford Brown, David Khunne, etc...) and a filmography including over 170 titles, it is extremely difficult to catalogue and categorize his work, despite the existence of many retrospectives and studies in both Europe and the United States. Jess began his career as an assistant director, the high point of which was working with Orson Welles whom he admired greatly. Jess himself became well known in 1961 with The Awful Doctor Orloff, a horror film which instantly became a classic. Working with Jess on the same project was Howard Vernon, an actor whose name was synonymous with Eurocine (the production company at the time most closely associated with genre cinema) and who later became one of Jess Franco's key actors. From that moment his international career took off, his credits include The Diabolical Dr Z, Lucky the Inscrutable, Count Dracula, Vampyros Lesbos and Succubus. Working with the most famous producers in B movies, Harry Allan Towers and Arthur Brauner, Jess Franco adapted classic horror and adventure films such as Fu Manchu, Doctor Mabuse and Frankenstein. Over the course of his lifetime, the legendary director Orson Welles (1915-1985) was forced to leave many of his grander movie-making projects unfinished, generally for want of sustained financial backing. Each successive unfinished effort generated buzz throughout the worshipful film community that only served to brighten the luster of his legend. Thus it was only a matter of time before one of his many admirers bought the rights to the fairly extensive footage he shot for his film Don Quixote (begun in 1955) and attempted to edit it into some semblance of a finished film, based on research into Welles' stated intentions and notes. A fuzzy, out-of-focus print of the resulting film was shown at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, and it was immediately deemed as a hashed-up job, a travesty bordering on the sacrilegious, by the assembled deeply interested and knowledgeable viewers. Their criticism focused mainly on issues that ordinary viewers would deem excessively technical, but the gist of it was that this was a very un-Wellesian use of Welles' footage. However, the film does offer viewers a unique opportunity to see some of the master's mature story ideas onscreen. The film tells an abbreviated version of the Dracula story using behind-the-scenes footage from Count Dracula. Thus, we see crew members and lights in dramatic scenes; often, these scenes are preceded by sequences where we see the set and actors being prepared. For example, before Dracula is shown rising from his coffin, Christopher Lee is seen getting made up and climbing into the coffin as a crew member covers him in fake spiderwebs. This gives the film a humorous tone: scenes meant to shock in Jesus Franco's original film are intercut with the actors making faces between takes and fooling around with the crew. The film was considered very subversive at the time of its release; many identify Christopher Lee's Dracula with Francisco Franco. By showing the almost campy falseness that goes into creating the "frightening" image of Dracula (Portabella often focuses on the poorly-made special effects and the shoddy filming conditions), the filmmakers lampoon the similarly transparent efforts of dictators like Franco to create powerful images of themselves in the media.
