Based on a true story, Sergeant Peter King of the Army Dental Corps, too old to fight, and Private Leslie Cuthbertson, a trainee dental mechanic in the Corps, are thrown together by their passionate desire to see active service. Armed with just two revolvers and a dozen grenades, King persuades Cuthbertson to join him on a mission to occupied France. In a letter to Winston Churchill, King explains their intention to invade France and fight the Germans. After a number of failed attempts, they finally arrive by boat and stumble across a German radar station. They succeed in blowing up what they believe to be the main Operations Room, but are soon forced to make their escape as the entire compound unexpectedly erupts with gunfire and explosions. After narrow escapes from the Germans and a stray mine in the Channel, the two men are picked up at sea and interrogated as spies. Identified as deserters, they are returned to their barracks to be court-martialed. At the eleventh hour King and Cuthbertson are saved by the arrival of Major Merton, Churchill's Chief Intelligence Advisor. Their letter has been received in Whitehall and Merton corroborates their heroic story. Exonerated of lying, King and Cuthbertson are nevertheless reprimanded by the Court for their behavior, but receive an invitation to tea with the Prime Minister should they ever be in Whitehall. American businessman Jack Woods rents a cottage on the enchanted Emerald Isle which is occupied by a family of leprechauns. Leprechaun Seamus Muldoon's son and son's friends crash the fairies' costume ball and Muldoon's son falls in love with fairy Princess Jessica. Their love re-ignites a feud between the leprechauns and the fairies, which escalates into a war. The Grand Banshee warns of terrible consequences and Jack Woods is chosen to make peace. Walmington on Sea 1940, the manager of Martins Bank, George Mainwaring refuses credit to a customer who wants to cash a cheque. The man protests that as a war is on he would have thought banks would have abolished red tape nonsense, Mainwaring emphasises that this man could be a spy. Mainwaring is unaware that he is a Major General. Later, Mainwaring, his chief clerk, Wilson and junior clerk Frank Pike hear the Rt. Hon. Anthony Eden's call for local defence volunteers on the radio. Sweeping into action Mainwaring takes charge when he finds the local police are not prepared for a surge of applicants. Mainwaring appoints himself Captain, Wilson the sergeant and Jones, the local butcher, Lance Corporal after the old campaigner bribes him with some sausages; they base themselves in the local church hall. Across the English Channel, the Germans plot Operation Sealion, while the LDV plot the actions they will take when faced with the enemy. As the newly formed platoon discusses petrol bomb tactics two workman arrive at the church to dismantle a church bell to be melted down for the war effort. The vicar, a campanologist decides to give his bells one final ring, unaware that he triggers off what the LDV perceive as a warning of invasion by the Germans.
