In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat on every hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Forty-one years after they played their first note on a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story, with the help of archival footage, still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Brothers backing up contemporary performers. I just happened to see this film last night at NYC's great movie revival
house, Film Forum, where a brand-new 35mm print has been unreeling for the
past few weeks. Although I DID learn a great deal about this legendary
sports figure from watching the film, I must say that I walked out of the
theatre feeling extremely disappointed. Before explaining why, let me
first
say that the film is divided into two sections. The first was filmed in
1964
and '65 and is in black and white. It deals with the buildup and followup
to
Ali's (then Cassius Clay's) title bouts with Sonny Liston; the first in
Florida, the second in Maine. We see all the hullabaloo surrounding the
bouts, we see the weigh-ins and the trash talking that Clay used to be
famous for; we see Clay goofin' around with the Fab 4, we are shown a
drama
class talking about Clay in a Harlem school, and on and on. It all builds
suspensefully toward the big fights. But when it comes to the main
events...nada! This is a documentary about one of the world's most
legendary
living boxers...and contains not a single moment of actual boxing! Not
one! Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

Death Of A Beatle is an extraordinary documentary film which details the tragic actions that forever linked John Lennon to Mark David Chapman. Journalist and biographer Jack Jones, who has interviewed Chapman extensively during the past twenty five years (including an exclusive interview with Chapman from New York's Attica Prison where he offers an apology to Lennon's family), presents a comprehensive investigation into the assassin's background and motivation while detailing the forensic evidence that culminated in Lennon's tragic execution. Death Of A Beatle also celebrates Lennon's remarkable life featuring rare archival footage of the Beatles rise to fame to the public's overwhelming display of grief, plus never-before-seen photographs and exclusive interviews with his close friends and collaborators, including Pete Best, the original drummer for the Beatles, and featuring clips from Lennon's last-ever interview. Biography of rock star Jimi Hendrix chronicles his early career, including a stint with Little Richard who fired him for getting too flamboyant, to his tragic failure. Struggling to find a niche, he moves to England where he becomes friends with musician and producer Chas Chandler (Christian Portenza). Chas then teams him with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding (Krit Holdenreid, Christopher Ralph) to form the Experience. As Hendrix gets public attention, Chas then introduces him to a major record producer (Billy Zane) who takes over his career. While this gets Hendrix international exposure, it also places him in the hands of people interested only in the money aspects that his career offers them. One of the early disasters foisted on him by the record company is an opening bill for "The Monkees" on an American tour. His then unknown act is booed by teens just wanting to see their idols. A genius and a perfectionist, Hendrix drives everyone crazy as he starts making albums himself without producers or the Experience. Pushed by the record executives beyond his limits, he turns to drugs and wild parties for release which ultimately leads to his demise. Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

An instant classic when released in September 1971, John Lennon's Imagine was the ex-Beatle's solo masterpiece, and its musical legacy is matched here by priceless footage of Lennon's creative process, independently edited from original 16-millimeter footage by producer-director Andrew Solt with the hands-off approval of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. Incorporating footage from John and Yoko's original film Imagine (clips of which were previously included in the 1988 documentary Imagine: John Lennon), Gimme Some Truth presents Lennon, Ono, coproducer Phil Spector, and a host of gifted musicians in a fluid context of conflict, community, and craftsmanship. Bearing witness to every stage of the recording process, this 63-minute documentary succeeds as a visual diary, a study of familiar music in its infancy, and a revealing portrait of the then-30-year-old Lennon--from witty clown to confrontational perfectionist--at the peak of his post-Fab Four inspiration. Amazing that a nearly hour-long film about a Beatle that contains almost no music could still be worthwhile, but that's the case with John & Yoko's Year of Peace.
The year in question is 1969, when the newly married couple staged the notorious "bed-in" at a Toronto hotel to promote their somewhat naive but sincere campaign for world peace; they then moved on to Montreal, where "Give Peace a Chance" was recorded in another hotel room, before returning to Toronto, where Lennon (accompanied by Eric Clapton and others) became the first Beatle to perform in concert without his mates.
There's no film of that event here, but there is a great deal of other Lennon footage, revealing him to be utterly honest, unpretentious, gentle, and approachable.
Ono and others who were there recall the events in interesting interviews conducted around the time of this 2000 documentary, but it's the scenes from 69 that make this an invaluable document. Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

Woody Harrelson narrates as This film explores the history of the American government's official policy on marijuana in the 20th century. Rising with nativist xenophobia with Mexican immigration and their taste for smoking marijuana, we see the establishment of a wrong headed federal drug policy as a crime issue as opposed to a public health approach. Fueled by prejudice, hysterical propaganda and political opportunism undeterred by voices of reason on the subject, we follow the story of a costly and futile crusade against a substance with questionable ill effects that has damaged basic civil liberties.
Definitely an interesting film, with lots to learn from it, but by no means the definitive word on cannabis. Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

The singing group, The Beatles, at the height of their popularity, made this cartoon of a land that is taken over by the Blue Meanies. They are recruited by an escapee to come and bring joy (and music) back to the land. The techniques are quite psychedelic in the cartoons and much care was taken to have the walks and mannerisms of the individual Beatles cartoons match the originals. The Beatles first film since "Help" was largely Paul McCartney's project. The story follows a bus load of eccentric characters on a magic journey through the English countryside. Rather than a unified narrative, it becomes a series of psychedelic clips promoting various songs including "The Fool on the Hill," "Blue Jay Way," "Your Mother Should Know," "I Am the Walrus" and "Magical Mystery Tour." The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band are seen in a strip club playing "Death Cab for Cutie." Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

"A Hard Day's Night" captured Beatlemania as it was happening, and more than four decades later, it remains a peerlessly zesty rock 'n' roll fable. Director Richard Lester's jump cuts now seem exhilarating as Jean-Luc Godard's, John Lennon's wisecracks as well timed as Groucho Marx's. Yet this original Fab Four movie is innocent in a way no other later rock 'n' roll film could be, and much of the credit must go to the thousands of screaming teenage girls in the audience--the ones who's lips form such magical words as "John!" and "Paul!" and "George!" and "Ringo!" while tears stream down their cheeks. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney shake their mop tops in unison after the line "She loves you, and you know you should be glad!" it sends the audience into hyperspace. Watching The Beatles getting their first taste of audience frenzy, you understand why the '60s had to happen. Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.
