He's Such a Girl (2009) was directed by Sean Carr. It's a modest little independent film that doesn't aim very high and goes about as high as it aims. The basic premise is that Whitney (Bryan Fisher) is a really great guy who is considered too gentle, too friendly, and too genuine to be straight. Actually, he's straight, and he's madly in love with his girlfriend Taylor (Tiffany Dupont). Whitney has a best friend, Aldo (Will Stiles), who is the worst best friend a nice guy ever had. Whitney is ready to marry Taylor, but Taylor keeps telling him to wait. To wait. To wait. Taylor has a secret (Can you guess what it is?) and Aldo knows the secret. He won't tell, if . . . OK--Whitney is pushing, Aldo is scheming, and Taylor is telling Whitney to wait just a little bit longer. I said to myself, "If Taylor says 'Please, just give me time' once more, I'm going for coffee." The coffee was excellent, and the cookie wasn't bad either. We saw this film at the Little Theatre as part of the first-class ImageOut: Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Insofar as it works at all, it will work well on DVD. A New York advertising executive (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who is about to land a big account, has his life shaken up when it becomes known that he has lied about having a college degree. After being fired, his life is further shaken by his debtors who had counted on paying after landing the account. Having to go on the run, he is called back to his southern town roots, when his great aunt dies. At the reading of the will, he learns he has been asked to assume the mantle of choir director of his great aunt's church and if he can get the choir in the Gospel Explosion in Atlanta, he will inherit stock worth $150,000. Unfortunately the choir leaves a lot to be desired and he has to start recruiting. Among others, he gets three prisoners to join. More importantly, he gets a "sinner" (Beyonce Knowles) from one of the local night clubs to join. While initially scorned and resisted, nonetheless her voice wins everyone but the hardcore church busybody. Contains mild sexual language (a lengthy discussion of the different kinds of "booty"). Oz is a Montreal dentist, paying off debts so he can divorce his wife: the dislike is mutual. When she learns their new neighbor is hit man Jimmy the Tulip, with a price on his head, she sends Oz to Chicago to earn a finder's fee telling Mob boss Yanni where to find Jimmy. To get his wife off his back, Oz goes, his assistant Jill urging him to get laid while there. One of Yanni's men awaits Oz at the hotel; Oz's now in too deep to avoid telling Yanni what he knows. Meanwhile, Oz's wife rats on Oz to Jimmy, hoping Jimmy will kill Oz and she can cash in on life insurance. Oz meets Jimmy's wife (Yanni's captive), flips for her, and the double-crosses mount. This movie is a remake of the hit series which starred, Phil Silvers as Sgt. Bilko. In this movie, Bilko tuns the motor pool and has all sorts of scams going on like gambling, renting out military vehicles, and so on, which are all violations. However, his commanding officer, Colonel Hall overlooks them, cause he is more concerned about his future, cause a lot of bases are being closed, and the inspector, Major Thorn was on the verge of doing that. But when he heard that Bilko was on the base, he turned into a mad dog. It seems that Thorn was a "thorn" in Bilko's side many years ago but through a series of misunderstandings, Thorn was accused of carrying out or being the brains behind one of Bilko's schemes, he would be sent to Greenland and his career has not gone as he hoped it would and now wants revenge on Bilko.
