Ownership of the castle Portillon is the subject of a long-running legal dispute between two mature gentlemen, Count D'Alsay and Colonel Delaroche. While continuing the long process of litigation, an elderly washerwoman maneuver skillfully to bring together his two young grandchildren, Monique and Babette, the two opponents, so that, whoever he wins the case, the castle is in any case assured the family. To disrupt the plans of the laundress, and to deepen the rift between the two gentlemen involved almost simultaneously a struggling ex-lover of a dashing colonel and grandson of the count. About to fight a duel, Delaroche and D'Alsay are stopped by the arrival of the Attorney General of the Supreme Court of the State, which, based on some documents conclusive, is able to pronounce a definitive sentence: is the owner of the castle Philippe old butler, a direct descendant of Philippe Brenton, former owner of the manor.
