The Assassin (1967)THE ASSASSIN probably isn't what you're looking for if you're seeking a fast-paced, fight-laden kung fu flick. It's a long, deliberately paced film with more emphasis on drama and character interaction than on-screen fighting, but it does manage to deliver on that level (to put it mildly) in the third act. Prior to that, expect to see very little action.
That said, this is a masterpiece. It's one of the smartest and most dramatically impressive films of the entire Shaw cannon and patient viewers will find it to be a rewarding and thoughtful film. Jimmy Wang-Yu (rarely better) stars as the assassin of the title, a young warrior whose life's ambition is to kill the leader of a militia group that is responsible for the killings of his fellow students, among others. He falls in love with his childhood sweetheart, but even her pleas for him to stay with her can't supersede his desires to get bloody. To say more would be criminal.
Again, this is not an action film, but the finale is something to behold for fans of such movies. Is it worth the wait? Definitely. Does Wang-Yu display his martial arts abilities? Here and there, but you'll have to wait for the final act to see him really explode. It's stunningly well made (after all, it was directed by the great Chang Cheh, and it's one of his best films) and the script is dynamite.
Don't miss THE ASSASSIN. However, if it's wall-to-wall action you seek, you might look elsewhere. This one's for serious filmgoers.
