In 1620s France, dreaded swordsman Gil de Berault returns from carrying out a mission for Cardinal Richelieu, and finds the Cardinal worried about growing opposition from the Huguenots in the south. The Cardinal also warns de Berault that dueling has been outlawed, and will henceforth be punishable by death. Gil, however, promptly disobeys the law and is indeed sentenced to death. The Cardinal offers to cancel the sentence if de Berault is able to capture the duke who is organizing plans for an uprising. Gil travels to the duke's castle and is allowed to stay as a guest, but the duke's wife and sister immediately suspect that he is a spy. A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. Nothing is being manufactured at all any more and society has broken down into primative localized communities. In 1966 a great plague wipes out most of what people are left but small numbers still survive. One day a strange aircraft lands at one of these communities and its pilot tells of an organisation which is rebuilding civilization and slowly moving across the world re-civilizing these groups of survivors. Great reconstruction takes place over the next few decades and society is once again great and strong. The world's population is now living in underground cities. In the year 2035, on the eve of man's first flight to the moon, a popular uprising against progress (which some people claim has caused the wars of the past) gains support and becomes violent. Maria Marten is a poor but pretty country girl in Suffolk. Since she dreams of a better life than drudgery on the farm, she is delighted when the gypsy Crazy Nell foretells that she will be wooed by a rich gentleman. In fact, Nell is plotting revenge on the local squire's son William Corder, who had seduced and then abandoned Nell's sister. When Nell tells Corder that Maria is in love with him, her plan is complete. Corder meets Maria on her way to the country fair, seduces her, and, when she becomes pregnant, abandons her. Afraid that his father may learn the truth, Corder poisons the baby and murders both Maria and Nell. Before she dies, however, Nell is able to name Corder as her killer. The crime might still have remained undiscovered, but Maria's mother's dreams prompt Maria's father to search in the Corders' Red Barn. When Maria's body is discovered, the police are called.
