A retired Mafioso takes the misstep of a lifetime - and inadvertently triggers a most inconvenient love affair between two complete strangers - in this zany German-language farce from Teutonic director Sebastian Niemann. The hermetic (Don Enrico Puzzo) (screen vet Franco Nero) may have put the bulk of his professional life as a godfather behind him, but he mistakenly reasons that this will permit him to publish his tell-all gangster memoirs sans consequence. Instead, it draws both fear and concern from a vast number of people whose lives and safety will be at stake if news of Enrico's exploits hits the presses. The story is passed in S. Fine for the smallest of children, presumably the intended audience. Older children and adults will find it too childish, too long, and not nearly as well executed as, say, THE FOX AND THE HOUND or FINDING NEMO with which it bears some similarities plot-wise. Interesting mix, near the end, of CGI with traditional 2-D animation, particularly in a sequence involving a marine life-devouring submarine, but not enough to sustain one's full interest. It doesn't help that it is a foreign cartoon, either. The English script requires the voice actors to occasionally cram an awful lot of words into a single sentence, much like a Japanese cartoon. Also, as is often the case with foreign cartoons redubbed in English, some of the dialogue is trite, poorly translated or just plain lame. High points: a truly beautiful execution of Arctic ocean waters and some very funny supporting characters in the form of four bumbling lemmings who cannot seem to ever get where theyre going. A prat-falling penguin, which I thought might be this cartoon's answer to the shaky seagull in THE RESCUERS or Dom DeLuise's buffoon-ish cat in A MOUSE TALE or even Robin Williams' hysterically goofy bird in ONCE UPON A RAINFOREST (title?), was simply dreadful and unfunny in his antics. He makes things worse by performing not one but two very bad musical numbers. A subplot, involving the titular hero's inadvertent transportation to a tropical island, completely throws off the movie's momentum, and was absolutely unnecessary even if this subplot came from the book upon which the film is based. Steer clear of this one unless you have a 4-year-old starving for something new to watch. It is, unfortunately, nearly 90 minutes in length, to boot. Watch Movies Online for Free on 10StarMovies.

A Swedish Pippi Longstocking television series was created based on the books in 1969. The first episode was broadcast on Sveriges Radio TV in February 1969. The production was a Swedish-West German co-production and several German actors had roles in the series. The Swedish series was re-edited as four dubbed feature films for U.S. distribution. As Astrid Lindgren was unhappy with the 1949 adaptation, she wrote the script herself for this version. The series was directed by Olle Hellbom who also directed several other Astrid Lindgren adaptations. Inger Nilsson gave a confident oddball performance that was uncommonly consistent and eccentric for a child actress. This version is the most well known version in Sweden and has been repeated numerous times by SR-SVT. In other European countries this is the most favored version of Pippi Longstocking. We don't know why this extraordinary film was never made available officially on DVD... Anthony Quinn's performance alone makes this a must-see. There are relatively few films in which an actor identifies so profoundly with his character, a phenomenon always unique for us, moviegoers. But Quinn's powerful portrayal of an innocent Romanian, literally dragged out of his house and everyday life by forces he cannot comprehend, is only part of what makes this film great. The script is based on a book published in Paris by a Romanian priest who fled the Communist take-over of his country, and the film succeeds to go deep into a little known area of East-European history. Told as a succession of Kafka-esquire twists of fate, the misadventures of Johann Moritz (told openly and honestly, without any of the political correctness currently so precious in Hollywood) are in fact a eulogy for the lost innocence of the Romanian people... it is devilishly ironic that this eulogy is signed by a French director, working with the American money of an Italian producer, and overseeing a multinational cast fronted by an extraordinary Mexican-born thespian.
